On-line insulation monitoring combined with on-insulation fault location offers operators the ultimate solution for AC440V low voltage main distribution systems earth fault detection and location. Continuous insulation monitoring provides the ideal maintenance tool, with long term trend insulation level data being made available for the installation SCADA system, to allow electrical maintenance to be intelligently and cost effectively planned to requirement, rather than to fixed time periods. Combined with automatic on-line earth fault location to accurately and quickly pinpoint faulty circuits these systems ensure that vessel 440V power system security is greatly enhanced.

Off-line insulation monitoring also plays its role, looking at essential plant such as generators, deck winches (RAS), cranes, fire pumps, shore supply connections and switchboard interconnections when they are de-energised to ensure that earth faults are continuously monitored and reported even when not in use. This allows failures to be detected at an early stage prior to the next and possibly emergency situation when this equipment is required to operate.

Continuous on-line insulation monitoring of both AC 115V (60 & 400HZ) and DC 24V systems with trend logging is also a valuable aid to having secure vessel operation, this is often combined with portable earth locations systems, to enable rapid fault location and repairs.

Recent UK naval surface ship projects utilising Bender systems include, LPH(HMS Ocean), LPD and AO vessels and installation is in process on the T45 class which is in build.
