New LINETRAXX® CTBS60 AC/DC sensitive measuring current transformer

We have launched a new split-core measuring current transformer (CT), making it even easier to upgrade to RS4 signal power protection systems.

The new CT was developed by our technical team in response to customer feedback highlighting a need for larger current transformers to accommodate greater cable sizes. Our technical engineers collaborated closely with clients to deliver a solution tailored to operational requirements.

Our current transformers work in conjunction with RS4 signal power protection systems to quickly locate faults at a Tier 1 or Tier 2 level, in accordance with NR/SIGELP/27725. The new product will work with all cable sizes currently used by Network Rail on their signal power and can be easily installed without turning off or disconnecting any cables.

The compact design of the new CT allows it to be installed directly into existing location cases and switchboards, removing the need for costly and disruptive infrastructure upgrades. Combined with its split-core construction, this eliminates the requirement to disconnect live systems – a process that typically demands possessions, restricted working windows and expensive night shifts, particularly in rail.

Avoiding disconnection not only saves significant time and cost, but also removes the risk associated with re-energising ageing equipment, which can fail when brought back online. The result is a safer, faster and more economical upgrade path that protects operational continuity, reduces project risk and supports long-term asset reliability and performance.

Stuart Garnett, Senior Applications Engineer for Bender UK, said, “One of the key advantages of our current transformers is that they are bidirectional, meaning that in dual-end fed systems, they can monitor in either direction. The maintenance team does not need to open the transformer and turn it around physically.”

By introducing this new product to the market, we can now offer customers, such as Network Rail, a tailored solution depending on their unique project requirements.

Stuart continues, “Current transformers (CTs) are installed inside Functional Supply Points (FSPs) to evaluate and locate fault sources in a very short time period. The installation in FSP renders the Tier 1 variant class 2 compliant, eliminating the need for earth connection, with all trackside equipment able to be fully integrated into existing FSP enclosures”.

We are delighted to have collaborated directly with customers to identify a requirement and develop this new product for the rail industry. At Bender UK we understand the critical importance of maintaining uninterrupted railway operations. Through continuous innovation and the development of solutions for rail applications, we can continue solving problems that benefit the industry.
